The Key to Remote Working – How to Successfully Work From Home

The current pandemic has seen a sharp increase in remote working. Many of us have turned parts of our homes into a workspace and adapted to working remotely. So, how do you get it right? Here we look at ways to ensure you get remote working down to a fine art.

Work Space

Not everybody has an office or a spare room. However, it is important that you designate an area as your workspace. Laptops and phones are portable, but avoid falling into the habit of working from your sofa or bed. You should treat your homework space as you would the office and use it when you are working. A suitable desk and comfortable office chair are essential. Your employer should be able to help you with this.

Communicate with your household

If you live with someone, be sure to talk through your remote work plans with them. Explain what you need, and the times you will be working to achieve a work/home balance. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed, and ensuring those you live with understand and support your situation is key.

The amount of technical tools and applications is astonishing. Technology makes it easier than ever to work remotely. Make full use of software such as Zoom or Microsoft teams, for meetings and communication. Shared drives are also great for sharing your workload. You may even want to use GIFS and memes on a work WhatsApp group to boost morale. When working from home, technology is your friend.

Communicate with colleagues

As mentioned above, group chats, meeting software and daily check-ins are a great way of ensuring you stay connected with your team. Teamwork is essential, and you need to know that you are all on the same page. Out of sight should not mean out of mind. If you are struggling, reach out as you would in the office. If someone else is struggling, see if you can help.

You should treat your work hours the same at home as you would in the office. This means keeping to the designated times when clocking on and off. Be sure to have a break for lunch and the odd tea break away from the screen. Keeping to the same routine is essential. This will help you differentiate between work and home life.
