After many long years of Facebook followers suggesting a ‘dislike’ button would be a handy tool to show their disgust at some of the very worst types of status updates, the Facebook Gods many finally be giving in to demand.
Mark Zuckerburg, CEO of the social media giant, held a live question-and-answer session, streamed on Facebook on Tuesday. During the session he said that the company was testing alternatives to the ‘Like’ button.
“People have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years and today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it.”
It may or not be an actual ‘dislike’ button that could potentially cause friction amongst the social media masses. Such a button may not be well received by users not liking such obvious disdain being shown so publicly. But a tool for showing empathy for certain posts, such as news of a disaster or personal loss, looks like it may finally be in the offing.
“Not every moment is a good moment,” he said, but has previously dismissed the idea of a ‘dislike’ button saying “Some people have asked for a dislike button because they want to be able to say ‘that thing isn’t good,’ and we’re not going to do that,” Zuckerberg said. “I don’t think that’s socially very valuable, or great for the community.”
No doubt, the Facebook community will no doubt wait patiently for further updates, and in the meantime, continue to click ‘like’ on all upcoming news from Facebook itself.
