5 Steps To A Great Homepage

Your site’s home page is often the first contact that visitors have with your site. A good home page helps turn casual visitors into repeat visitors – or even customers! Do you know what visitors want – or don’t want – to see on your home page?

1. Keep Your Visitors Awake

As exciting as it may seem to write your life story on the home page of your website, the only people it will really interest is you and perhaps your family! Keep it simple and concise. Use eye catching, attention grabbing one liners to pique the visitor interest! For example, if you sell cameras at discount prices – don’t drivel on about every individual type of camera or all their benefits – just tell people you sell discounted cameras, how long you have been selling them for and where you are selling them from.

2. Make It Short And Simple

Again, serve up your information in usable, scannable chunks. Adding pages and pages of text for them to scroll through won’t keep them engaged for long. Equally so, don’t over complicate your home page with too many boxes of text or images.

Be succinct! If you really feel you have a lot of information to convey perhaps add bullet points, tick lists or columns to your page. Explain what you are offering and why it’s valuable. All other information or product descriptions can be adding in full on a products or services page deeper into your website.

3. Literally, Tell Your Visitors Where Did To Go

An understandable, easy-to-use navigation system is super important for your site! If visitors cannot find what they are looking for, they will get frustrated and leave! A few simple rules:

– Make your navigation buttons easy to find and use!

– Add a search facility

– Add a site map

Don’t waste your time on a fabulous home page, if your visitors can’t work out where they need to go from there!

4. Look After It!

Once you award winning home page is finished, don’t abandon it like an unwanted puppy; keep it fresh, up to date and relevant! Make sure it is coded well, loads quickly and is responsive so it can be resized to view on any tablet or mobile device.

If you have special offers or seasonal products to offer, make sure the home page make reference to these. Add testimonials if you get them, but rotate them often.

Add links to any social media sites you are on, update these as often as necessary and make sure that there are no broken links or error messages when your customers click through.
