We all love a good internet spoof! They whizz round social media faster than a rat up a drainpipe and leave us all wondering “what the heck did I just see?”. So far, April Fools Day 2015 seems to be no exception to the rule! Here in the GT Creative office we are far too busy creating super awesome websites and promotional material for our clients to have time for pranking, but we thought we would share some of the best gags from the UK today.
April Fools Day brings us hilarity every year. The 1st April is known as a day when people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other, and we spend our time searching the press and other media for silly stories. Sadly, it is not a national holiday, but it is well known in Canada, Europe, Australia, Brazil and the United States. Apparently, one of the earliest recorded associations between today and such foolishness can be found in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales – Good on you Geoffrey!
So, without further ado – here are some of our favourites of this year, brought to you by the very best of the internet.
1. Ant and Dec to add third permanent member to presenting team
So, first up, our beloved TV presenting duo are to add a third member to their line up! Ant, Dec and Anton Du Beke – what a dream team! And what a great name! Well done to the Radio Times for making us grin with this one. Catch the full story here
2. BBC Website sells Wolf Hall Codpieces – today only!
Are you a fan of the BBC period drama Wolf Hall? Fancy yourself as a bit of a Tudor monarch! The website even encourages you to “channel your inner Henry on Highgate High Street”. Its utter brilliance! You can purchase your codpiece for a mere £49.99 and it even has what appears to be genuine customer reviews. So if you fancy keeping your tackle tucked away Tudor style, click here to see more. (Except you can’t really buy them, cos its April Fools!)
3. Santander to open “Cycle Thru” branches
Even the banks are getting in on the fun! Santander (or Abbey National as a lot of us still call it), announced on Twitter that they will soon be opening their first ever “Cycle Thru” branch in London! Twitter lapped it up, complete with a picture of a Santander shop front with a some cyclists popping in and out. Great stuff! Don’t expect to be taking advantage of this any time soon though as it is definitely an April Fool.
4. Microsoft launches MS-DOS for mobile
Good one for all the techies out there. MS-DOS, the funny old operating system that used to involve lots of typing of the words DIR and CD in front of everything, has had a genuine app released as part of an elaborate April Fools day prank. Undoubtedly one of the most involved pranks out there today, but what better way to get folks talking about your brand. You can see the video of the app here
5. Drunken locks, The Piggyback App and bouncy aisles at Tescos!
Finally, here’s a wee mash up of some of the best of the rest that we wish were true. Check out the link here
